Mother Chicken Raising Babies?

We have a 3 year old female chicken.
My dad bought two babies to keep her company, She was getting thin and seemed depressed lately.
Her friend recently passed away.

But it has been two weeks, This girl is a HAWK around these kids.
She is very protective! Wont even let us near them, Pecks at us!
They are just tiny little babies and she is an amazing mother.
She loves them to death, Is this normal?

She is so happy, gained all her weight back and more lively than ever!
I believe she believes these are "HER" babies!

What kind of chicken is she? Breed has a lot to do with it sometimes.

Im not sure? Large and Brown!?
Lays green/blue eggs? She was a poultry chicken, Due to be killed and ate at a local meat market.

We prefered to get one from there rather than the pet shop. Saved her life, She is a sweetheart in return.

What breed is she? Should I take pictures?

I think it's all about the individual bird. You may have gotten lucky in that she accepted the chicks rather than killed them. I do want to thank you for teaching me something though. I had no idea you could get chickens at a pet store.
