One of my second year broody hens lost her baby today :( (I have a good idea a snake got the baby) Well, my question is: Mommy hen seems to know her baby is gone and seems sad (understandable) how long till she's back to her normal self? Her chick was almost 6 weeks old. She's eating and drinking fine, but she keeps calling to her baby like she's looking for her. Also, is this going to ruin her as a broody hen, she's an OEGB.

    Thanks guys

She will probably go about her business in the next couple of days. She was probably close to leaving her chicks soon anyway. Broodiness is hormonal, and in a couple of weeks, she may start laying eggs again. Sorry for your loss. I would go into your coop a few times during the day--you may catch the snake.

Okay, good. I was worried about her. I looked all over my coop and didn't see the snake anywhere... I hope I catch him before he starts eating my eggs too.
