I think chickens molt mostly by season. Normally they molt as the temperature starts to drop and days get shorter before winter then they will again before summer arrives. It's as if they are going to have their winter coat before cold weather sets in then in the summer it's time to shed that winter coat before it gets hot. It sometimes seems the first really good molt starts at around 16-18 months of age. At least that's the way it has been for mine. I hope this has helped in responding to your question?

! Different breeds molt at different times - but it's an autumn thing when the hours of daylight start to decrease. So, I think it's normal. Best of luck to you!
