I have a brooder set up and in about a week will be getting 5 day old chicks. The car journey is around 2 hours long will they be ok? Will they need a heat source and what could I use to keep them warm whilst in the car? Should I just transport them in a cardboard box with wood shavings. Thanks

You can put them in a box with some shavings and put either a hand or foot warmer in for some heat. I got some chicks from a breeder and on my way home they were in a box with some shavings and I put the box on the floor of the passenger seat and put my car heater on the floor setting so the heated air would blow on the box and the chicks stayed nice and warm. Luckily my car has 3 zones, one for the driver, one for the passenger and one for the back seats.

5 chicks aren't very many so depending on the temperature and you location isn't listed. I would consider something for some heat for day olds. I received some chicks sent through the mail from a breeder and there was a warmer in the box with the chicks. One didn't survive the trip.

Thanks for all the replies, I will probably use a hand warmer wrapped in a towel to keep them warm
