EDIT: Please just answer my question! Thank you

I've been working on the ducks' new yard recently and noticed it's been extremely muddy. My dad only buys pine shavings and straw so those are the only options for what to put in the yard. Their coop hasn't been put in yet as I wanted to make sure the fencing was secure before that.

Which would be better for the yard??

Could you post pics and give a bit more info? Why is it muddy? Is it a drainage problem or a constant rain problem? Is it covered?

It's always been muddy. Constant rain. And no, we have no plans to have it covered.
Unfortunately, if the reason is constant rain, then covering is likely the only solution. If you don't then you will just end up with muddy straw or muddy shavings. If it's a drainage problem, then you would have other options, but if the drainage is good and it's still muddy, then that's a wrap. People may experiment with doing gravel and sand, but these do not sound accessible to you?

Once spring comes, we won't have as much rain. The only reason we have constant rain now, is because it's winter. We always get constant rain in the winter here but it stops once spring arrives

I was able to do a cover/roof for my ducks fairly cheaply. I bought one of those "portable garages" but one without sides just poles and roof. I did end up putting large tarp down one side for wind protection. Now the ducks have protection from overhead predators, sun, rain, and snow. Not sure where you are but they regularly go on sale at half-price here.

From now anyone who finds this post, please just answer my original question. I don't want to hear more about something that has nothing to do with my question :)
