My husband and I proudly finished our new walk in coop made of refurbished materials. We built it in our existing ourdoor enclosure. We didnt realize they could fit behind the coop (between coop and fence) and our little pullet ran in back and managed to roll onto her back and by the time we had got to her she had caught her wing by the fence (we think) and she broke her wing. When I say "broke" I mean tore her wing open bone protruding broke :( We felt horrible. I called my work (I work as a vet tech/receptionist) and figured out how to stabalize her wing with vet wrap and I found out the proper dosage of pain medication to get her through the night. I kept her inside in a smaller cage overnight and took her to work the next day. We did did an X-Ray of her wing and prepped her for surgery. She needed a wing amputation and it was very successful. That was last tuesday and she is recovering so well! I'm keeping her in a rabbit cage inside the big coop so that she can see and hear her sisters but is protected until her sutures come out and she has fully healed. We are using topical anti-biotic so as not to interfere with future egg quality. I'm so grateful to my boss (the vet whom proformed the amputation). And I am grateful for a supportive husband who understands why this crazy chicken lover cares enough to save a hen.
