How old are they exactly? They will probably overcome it after a while, you just have to not give them a reason to think that you will. :)

I find chickens peck when they are stressed. Do they have plenty of room? Able to get to and from the heat easily? The food and watering station is large enough that it doesn't ever go empty?

I second this...do you have a thermometer in your brooder...is there lots of chirping even when your not there? are they warm enough? can they access food and water easily or is there crowding at the feeders-if there is consider adding another set or getting larger ones.

another thought...are you handling your chicks daily? maybe the feel like a hand is a threat instead of a source of love or food.....

i have a thermometer and there is usually no chirping when the brooder lamp is on only when off but the feed container and the water container gets filled with pine shavings in less than a few minutes.yes i handle them daily but it seems they think of me as a threat and i also hand feed them but they seem ok with that. Also when i go and pick one up the rest try to gang up on my hand and bite it, i guess its because they think im a threat. if anyone can give some advice to how i can not become a threat and to thats lots of help[IMG]

also i just went to go and hand feed them and they kept flying all over the place and fly at my hand then bite it and one would come and fly with out me noticing and attack me and i've gotten lots of cuts or scratches from them. although my first batch that hatch about 2 months ago was great they loved to follow me and let me pet them and they still do but this new batch is like crazy they fly every where i think its because they want to escape.

Put your hand in very slowly, if you come at them suddenly from above and make sudden moves they will freak. Predators like hawks swoop down from above, so it's instinctive. Leave your hand in there with some treats in it, stroke them, wiggle your fingers and play with them. They'll learn over time that it's not a thread and that hands bring good things. Be patient and good luck!
