My little schnauzer Lola adores our 5 chickens and they don't mind her much either. As much as Lola digs the chicks, she is hell bent on keeping the squirrels out of her yard and chases them across, up and over the fences. Needless to say, the squirrels stay away when she is out to play. Here's the thing...a couple of the chickens have started to chase the squirrels in her absence. I'm not sure if they picked this up from the dog, or if it is their own natural instinct, but it is hilarious to watch.
Another reason to love my pets... my chickens make me breakfast, and Lola delivers it! Everyday (often several times a day), I will have an egg deposited at my feet. Occasionally when we are not home, she'll snack on one, but usually just leaves them under the kitchen table till we get home. Love it! Of course I have one chicken, "Monster", who is determined to deliver them herself I think. You cannot leave the back door open for a minute or she marches her little tail-feathers in like she owns the place. During the summer when the kids were in and out, she would have to be removed from the house several times a day. Here's hoping she doesn't figure out the doggy door!
