My 4 month old buff Orpington hen is hiding a bush. She was fine right before and all the sudden she ran to the bush. We have no idea why we think she might be laying an egg, but she is only 4 months old.

One of the chickens went on top of her and she started to do a “bagel” sound. We put them all back in the coop and she wound not shut up. We let them out and she got back to her spot and stoped the noise. She has been in there for about 20-30 minutes.

She’s probably about to lay an egg. 4 months old is about right for egg laying. Just listen for her to sing the song of Egg Laying in C minor in 2/4 time and you’ll know when she’s completed the deed! :)

Chickens sometimes do strange things!

She might be laying an egg.

She might have seen something tasty (like a bug) and ran over to eat it, then saw something else interesting and decided to stay there for a while.

She might have seen something scary (like a hawk overhead, or an airplane overhead) and ran to the bush to hide.

She might have decided to go in the shade and have a dust bath, and ran just because she felt like running.

And there are lots of other possibilities, too.

If you find an egg, you will know that's what she was doing. Otherwise, the only one who really knows is her :)
