Hi I'm Jessica and I purchased four 18 week Golden Comets on Friday after reading Raising Chickens for Dummies. My husband and I live on 15 acres and have two boys, 3 dogs, 1 cat and now 4 chickens. I have pretty much no idea what I'm doing other than trying to keep them alive and hopefully get some yummy eggs . We converted an old shed into a coop and built an attached run . It's a work in progress but we are enjoying it and my boys love their new chickens. I'm sure you'll find lots of posts from me in the HELP section. I'm glad to have found this place.

Welcome to BYC! I am amazed and just how easy these guys are with 15 acres and a favorable Cali environment it really sounds like those birds are set. Predator proofing would be my main concern for your new flock and everything else comes after well except the food/water bit.
Predator proofing is what drew me to find this site. We used some 2inx4in fencing we had leftover and I don't think that's going to cut it. I was hoping o get some advice on what to do here:

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. These two might be of particular interest to you at this stage:
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens
Topic of the Week - Keeping the Flock Safe from Predators

This is also an excellent article: How Much Room Do Chickens Need

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
