My chicks are scared to death of me

Chickens will be scared of anybody at first. Remember to always approach them gently and try to bond with them. Allow them to be used to you and when they are for a while, they won't find you so scary. Also, If you want to be close to them without scaring them, you can put some treats for them in your hand and be still. They'll see your kindness with them and they will start bonding with you. Remember to be patient. This worked for me and I hope it will for you! Good luck!

I had great experiences with chicks brooded in the house because people were always walking around and petting on them. Then I made an outdoor brooder. (due to much 'encouragement' from dh who thought 6 chicks were okay being in a brooder in the house but 30 chicks were not!) Chicks hatched myself were so much friendlier than bought chicks. Then I hatched some Russian Orloffs that are supposed to be sooo friendly. Not! Those chicks would run away and pile over each other to get away when the door opened. I provided free choice feed available 24/7 like usual until I got frustrated with not being able to touch the 'friendly' buggers- food in the hand didn't work cuz they could get it any time they wanted from the feeder without my hand. Okay- new tactic time! Fill feeder with what they eat during the day but will be empty at night. It keeps mice away anyhow:) When I go out in the mornings food in the hand makes them fly to me with no fear. Now they don't mind being touched any time of day with a full feeder and I have had to catch a few over excited chicks that tumble past the door in their attempt to touch THE HAND;-)
