During the major quarantine, I knew of someone with miniature chickens. I have a love of birds and decided to snag a chick. It’s been a dream of mine to hand raise a bird, as well as having a flock eventually.
I had to beg my boyfriend and mother to come help me out— I’m such a spastic, that I get nervous at panicking animals and couldn’t grab one. But then this beautiful, all white little chick was totally still. I said “Oh, hello” and softly picked her up. That’s when I got my first chicken Suzy Q.

She had a gorgeous chirping song every time she ate, and it was a lot easier to feed her greens back then. Now she’s way too spoiled lmao. I’d be a terrible parent.

While raising her, I took the opportunity to experiment a healthy diet between her and her siblings.

I can’t believe I remember her first few days so well when it’s been over a year. She was born in April 2020

After her original flock was sold off, I just spent my time hanging out with her. It’s been tons of fun.

Every night, or if she’s excited, she jumps right on your head and perches. Funniest thing in the world and I wonder why she does it

She’s jumped on tons of weird places, especially when she was small. Pre-waddle saga.

Lots of sleeping with my boyfriend

And a few cuddles before she developed larger breasts. She’s tried doing this again, but the meat gets in the way!! :(((

I remember teaching her foraging skills since she’d been an indoor bird up until this point. Oh man. I had a case of hawk moth caterpillar, which are about half a finger large or so. I let her have at it, thinking she’d rip at it, but then she took the whole thing in her mouth.
Next thing I know she’s choking on this massive thing—- it’s halfway out and she’s still being greedy. Unable to breathe or swallow and she’s trying to keep it away from me! I’ve had to prevent a good amount of suffocation during this period.

Then she got older and loved baths. Absolutely hates them now though, so it’s all but a wonderful memory.

Raising her was a new experience obviously, but it’s taught me a lot. Constant trial and error. She loves me though, so I bring my best for her.

The love of her life was my older cat, for sure. Absolutely obsessed with him before he left.

There is an unspoken respect beneath the frustration between these two

I’m so peeved that cat left!!! She loved him long time. The empty piece to this familial puzzle.
Afterwards I decided to get her a proper boyfriend.

This little man was totally smitten with her. He was very good and gentle. As opposed to my hen, who’s quite aggressive at times. He allowed her to peck roughly at his face, staying totally still. I never had a problem with him even though he was afraid of me. He would perch, and then allow me to pick him up gently from there.
However, he had neurological issues. There was an issue with him eating and drinking. Sadly, he passed away.
My hen Suzy was quiet and still, which is uncharacteristic of my robust mean girl.
I held her closer than she usually allows and pet her for a good while. I spent quite a lot more time with her.

Currently, she has a new bo. Now she’s acting quite rudely toward me, because he does NOT like me.

But that’s alright, cause she’s always gonna be my girl. And that’s the current story on my Covid Chicken :)
