I knew my little black Jap mix went broody but couldn't find her or her nest anywhere. Yesterday she came out of her hiding spot with 14 little chicks!!!! They are mixed with either the buff jap roo or the buff cochin roo. This is the first batch of chicks my hens have hatched. I'm so excited, look how cute!!! [IMG]

Congratulations! They are so cute! And 14 is impressive.

Quote:Okay, this might be a silly question, but I have to ask. I know after a hen and roo mate she can lay fertile for a couple of weeks. And some of the chicks tan heads and some black. If the chicks are all from one hen, can there be two separate fathers in one clutch (like cats) or are they all from one hen/roo couple?

Quote:I took eight chicks from her to raise in the brooder and let her keep six. She wil have an easier time keeping up with six i think.

I was wondering the same thing. The one thing about these chicks is they all have feathered legs and feet....like a cochin. So maybe they're all from the cochin roo.
