I saw a coarse hair on my chicken Lucy and plucked it off only to have her squawk and jump. On closer examination I discovered she's growing a handful of hairs on each thigh. They look and feel exactly like clear/white horse hair. There's nothing feather-like about them. She's an EE or possibly an olive egger. She'll be a year in April. What the heck is going on? Is it even possible for a chicken to grow actual hair, or is Lucy a total freak?

I have had pigeons have the same thing on their wings, I just plucked them out and haven't seen them since. Have you tried rubbing the fingers against the them to see if they come off? I think it could be keratin sheath or possibly a filoplume feather.

You're right. It's filoplume feathers. I learn something new every day. :)
