I picked up two pretty girls from Cheryl Cohen: Mille Fleur Leghorns. Leghorns are an Italian breed from Livorno, Italy. Mille Fleur, in Italy, is called millefiori , and is a kind of glass made in the Isle of Murano in the harbor of Venice.

Of course, we had to give the ladies proper Venetian names.
    We chose Veronica and Rosalba.

Veronica Franco was a poet, courtesan and fencer back in the Venetian renaissance. One of the most famous of all cortigiana onesta, the honest courtesans of Venice in the 16th century, she was also a proto-feminist, willing to speak up for her rights. A movie, Dangerous Beauty, covers some of her life, including her trial for witchcraft. See it sometime, it's got a great ending.

Here is one of her most famous quotes.
“When we women, too, have weapons and training,
we will be able to prove to all men
that we have hands and feet and hearts like yours.”

    (capitolo 16, lines 64-66)
    –Veronica Franco

Rosalba is the protagonist of the delightful movie Pane e Tulipani (Bread and Tulips), set in Venice. A young housewife and mother, Rosalba is left behind during a stop on the bus tour. Angry at being abandoned and forgotten (taken for granted), she hitchhikes to Venice and finds herself a new job and a new life, working at a tulip shop, rooming at the home of a waiter from Iceland who speaks the most courteous and formal Italian, and playing accordion.

Here's a pic of my new girls (currently in quarantine):

I've always thought that mille fleurs looked like caramel. Yummy! Those are some gorgeous chickens, all 3 of them.
