I have several free range hens. Death loses are a fact of life. So when one of my red sex links came up missing 10 days ago I assumed the worst. I had gone riding that day and left the tack room open to my trailer. When I got home, I put my horse away and checked the trailer for chickens. Didn't find any so I closed it up. I went out of town for Christmas assuming I had lost another bird. Today, I rode again. Lo and behold, my red hen reappeared, along with a bunch of mysterious poo on my tack. She must have been locked in the tack room all along. What a tough girl! No food or water for 10 days. I will be much more careful in the future. Can't believe she's okay. Wow.
These birds continue to amaze me. I have heard of stories like yours and seen birds heal from grievous injuries, and in the next instance seen them die from relatively mild injuries. I think that a lot depends upon the will to survive of the individual bird.
Hi and That's a remarkable story. Chickens can really endure a lot! Well I'm glad you found her safe and sound in the end. Enjoy the site
Please be extra careful with her now, cats get 9 lives, chickens do not. When you are gone does anyone check on the chickens??
