My rooster is being mean

We had 17 hens and 1 rooster. We got 18 hens from another farmer who didn't want to deal with them over the winter. We have had them for a week now, but they have hardly come out for out coop. Our rooster is attacking the new girls. Sparing them and just overall being a punk.

We actually really adore our rooster, he has never been mean or spared anyone. So, now what? Will this all calm down? I would think over a week now that he would have calmed down, but it actually seems to be getting worse. I had not noticed him being mean until today.

Is he attacking them or trying to mate with them?

If you haven't seen it before, mating looks like an attack.

If you did an out of the blue integration (dropped in out of the blue sky) then the rooster may well be defending his turf from the invaders. It will take a while for the original flock to accept the new comers if at all with out a fight.
