My son left my not quite six week old chicks out in a thunderstorm!!!

Poor little chicks. Welcome to the harsh reality of the out-of-doors! They're actually much tougher than we give them credit for, particularly at that age.

At 6 weeks they should be mostly feather out. Their feathers contain oils and lay a particular way both of which promote the shedding of rain. It's a rare thing to see a chicken really soaked to the bone. Take a long storm or really severe. Us humans on the other hand - no feathers, but what really soaks us to the bone are our clothes which absorbs water and holds it to us drawing warmth away. Ever notice how much colder you feel in the rain as opposed to the shower even if it's a very cool shower. It all in the clothes. That said I'm not suggesting you remove your clothes next time it rains unless you live in a very remote area.
