And the subjects are... (approximately 2-3wks old I think as these are my FIL's chicks)
    Chickie #1
    [IMG]

Chickie #2 (pretty sure this and #1 are the same)

    Chickie #3 (Barred Plymouth Rock?)

    Chickie #4

    Also Chickie #4

The size difference between Chickies #3 and #4

And the long long shot Chickie #5 is the black one in the very back. It was a shy one and didn't want pictures. It has solid black on the wing feathers unlike the striped winged ones.

I know these gals (I hope) are fairly young, but any educated guess is better then my living vicariously through my FIL's guesses. One of these days I'll get my own, but for now I have a doggie with a super high prey drive that would just think of them as free chew toys to play with.

The red ones are Red Sex-links, and the others are Barred Plymouth Rocks.

Thanks. Isn't there an easy way to tell gender with the sex linked breeds?

I just looked closer at the pictures. Are you saying chickie #1 is a red sex link or chickie #4 or both?

#1 and #2 look like Red Sex-Links (and are pullets). Chick #3 is a Barred Plymouth Rock, and Chick#4 looks like a Production Red. Chick #5 is likely a Black Australorp.

Those are all great guesses now that I can look them up by name. I was thinking my mystery black one was a black jersey giant but with further research I'm thinking black australorp is right because of the foot color.

I agree with red sex link and barred rocks. I've ended up with a black australorp out of the barred rock bin before, and honestly I liked her more than the barred rocks! They're beautiful!

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to enjoy living vicariously through my fil's chickens.
