    Never seen anything like that here in mountains of NC. Very pretty.

    Yes, it's a female bufflehead. I just came across several this morning here in San Diego.

    If you think she's pretty, the males are bright white with patches of dark colors that shine with a purplish/green sheen in the sunlight.

    I can't tell on the second one. It looks a bit like a lesser scaup, but could also be something else. Do you have a picture with better light, especially of the head and bill?
