Nail or tissue?

I have a couple of older chickens and one has her spur that has almost grown into the side of her leg. I would trim it like I do the other nails, but I can't tell if it's tissue or nail. I was an inexperienced chicken person and didn't do a good job managing the scale mites so I have a few of them who have lost their nails - especially a couple of older ones. I can tell with them but for the Chanticleer I can distinguish which it is. Does anyone have any helpful advice or do I just take a small snip at the tip to find out?
