May 26, 2011 #5 patandchickens Flock Mistress 12 Years Apr 20, 2007 12,520 444 341 Ontario, Canada You don't *have* to take off the bark, but it does make them waaaaayyyy easier to clean I have some 2x4 roosts and some tree-branch ones, and the chickens seem to like them both the same. And of course the tree branches are free (Of course if you look around you can find free 2x4s too, but they can be used for more other things than tree branches can ) Good luck, have fun, Pat
