Hi, I am in Polk County Fl and need show chickens for FFA . We are new to this and so we don't have a preference to breeds, as long as they are show quality. We are in a neighborhood so we can't have roosters but we have room for about 6 chickens. Can someone suggest a place in central Florida to get show quality birds? I'm a little unsure about Craigslist when we don't have the knowledge to make sure they are show quality.
    Thank you for any help!

Look up cflpoultrybreeders.org. This is Central Florida Poultry Breeders Association. There should be some contact numbers there of people who can put you in touch with members who may have show quality chickens available. They also have a Facebook page.

Glad to help anyone interested in starting to show poultry. It's been my favorite thing to do for the last several years. I've made a lot of good friends through showing and with very few exceptions, people that show are very welcoming and willing to help others get started.

How do you determine if they are show quality or not? My girls will be a month old on Monday ....[IMG]

You need a copy of the poultry standard to determine whether they are show quality. The standard is a book which describes each breed and what the perfect individual would look like. There's an APA (American Poyltry Association) standard that has the recognized large fowl and bantams in it and the ABA standard with just the ABA recognized bantams. Since most of the shows I go to are bantam only and I only show bantams, I have the ABA standard. No bird is perfect, but you try to raise birds that come as close to the standard as possible. That being said, people interpret some parts of the standard differently. It's possible to go to a double judged show and place first under one judge and not at all under another.
