This morning I noticed my oldest hen Brownie who is 10 years old has a cataract in one eye and maybe something forming in her other eye otherwise she seems happy and healthy and neither eye seems infected but she is definitely not keeping up with the younger birds in my flock the way she used to and is lower on the pecking order
Anyone out there have birds who are older or taken care of blind chickens before I need some advice on how to take care of her if she does go fully blind

Do you have any pictures of the eyes? The best thing for her would be to be in the same familiar environment where her food and water is the same. She may need to sleep in a nest box or on the floor. A crate with food and water would be good if she gets picked on.

Couldn’t seem to get any pictures of the eye that looks almost normal but here’s a picture of her other eye

Aww, bless her. @Eggcessive gave sound advice when she said to keep her in a familiar environment and keep the feed and water in the same spot. There are others who have successfully kept blind chickens, but I don’t have experience with this.

My oldest hen is almost seven and seems not to see so well in dim light. Sometimes she hesitates going into the coop unless I turn a light on for her. In the mornings, I will often help her down from the roost since she’s not seeing so well. This is something you may need to do with a blind hen someday.

To get more appropriate help, I suggest you rename this thread, to say something about needing help with a hen going blind.
