I recieved an order of ducklings today and I was shocked and very upset by what I saw. I had ordered 6 ducklings but littering the floor of the box were at least 11 dead chicks. The ducklings were all alive but one. My guess is that the farm porously put the dead chicks in the box. They also promised the box would be inaulated and it was not. I feel heartbroken about all the dead chicks. If I had know they were going to do this I would never have ordered the ducklings. Here are some pictures as proof. Does anyone know if there is a place where I can report this farm? I believe what they did is inhumane and terrible.

And again the name of the farm is IDEAL POULTRY.

I realize I may have over-reacted, and that this may just be shipping standard. I just did not believe they would ship them knowing the chicks would probably die and that they never told me this could happen.

Did you order chicks as well?? If not, then WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THEM?!?! How did they not notice that the chicks were in there? I just don't understand. Also, if the box was supposed to be inaulated and it was not, then that is on them. What a disgrace. I have never cared for ideal. Their website is absolute crap and looks like it hasn't been updated in 10 years. Order from Meyer Hatchery next time. I have had great success and health with their chicks!

I second the question... did you even order the chicks? It is absolutely horrible that a business that routinely ships live animals wouldn't insulate them and know how to ship them to insure maximum health.

You have the proof, I would contact Care2.com? The petition site and post on social media, you want people to know about this place and hopefully they get fined or shut down!

They're called "packing peanuts," usually extra baby roosters. Most hatcheries do this. I have always had mine survive during transit, but occasionally there is mishandling by the postal service along the way and a driver will leave the box in the truck in cold temps overnight. You are right that there should have at least been a heating pad or something in the box with them. Hatcheries do this en masse every year. I have had a lot of dead boxes of babies from other hatcheries, though not from Ideal Poultry yet. So sorry that you had to experience this [IMG]

But first, I would go straight to Ideal Poultry and demand a complete refund along with a lengthy apology. This is just disgraceful...and some people on here wonder why some BYC users have a bias against hatcheries...well maybe it is instances like these that make us wonder just exactly how absent-minded their employees are and what standards they hold themselves to. Sorry you experienced this Finny. I can't lie, I have heard complaints and seen some pretty stupid mistakes by hatcheries, but this takes the cake. 11 dead chicks in an order of ducks is atrocious.

So you are saying that this is a practice. Well, then, I pose a question. What if the buyer does not want Roosters?????????? If I have a rooster my town will confiscate my flock, so I would not appreciate being surprised with 11 of them!
