When we first built our coop for our 8 girls two years ago we didnt know as much as we do now. We had decided to get new birds but there was one problem...a lot of them turned out to be boys. This presented a few problems: how to keep the males seperate to reach maturity without caponizing; allowing the chicks to be seen and untouched to add the new hens to the coop; space we were already severely lacking; and keeping them from roosting on the nesting boxes.
Here's our old coop:
And here is the design for the addition:
The addition will have a infirmary/brooder/male coop on the bottom. Essentially a coop that is not always in use. We will add the run later. The top half will have a slanted roof that will lift up on the end for nest box access. The current egg door will be removed completely. We will be doubling our square footage in the top coop. This picture includes the first step. Here is where we are now:
Roosting bars and a floor have been installed in the lower coop. We have the walls and the upper floor cut but since our current birds are in occupancy we can not install everything until we can finish it all in one day. Today we plan to install laminate flooring on both floors and cut holes for ventilation, clean out doors on the walls and putting a last coat of paint on them. We hope to have the addition completed by this weekend. The run will be installed once it is complete.
