I ordered 2 welsummer females,2 speckled sussex females,2 bcm females ,1 salmon favorelle female ,1 crested cream legbar female and 2 adoptme straight run

The adopt me turned out to be a blue copper maran and white crested black polish

As always i was impressed on how well packed, how bright and lively after a 2 day trip from Meyers Hatchery in Ohio to South louisiana..
They cam in the smallest box yet, with a still warm heat pack, but 2 ventilation holes on 2 sides, the kids ate the grogel up rapidly ,drank very well and chowed down on food. They are in a small indoor brooder because temps were in the 50s today ..starting tomorrow lows will be in the 60s up to 85-90 which it what was so impressive it was 87 sunday and 40 monday and tuesday 50ish today. And they packed them perfectly..

The polish is a loud mouth..no pasty but ,thermoometers showing 94.2-95 on one side 90 on the other

3 rd small group since november..

2 local partridge cochin bantams started full time free ranging monday..

You don’t want the whole brooder to be that hot. One patch at 95ish, and then a cooler side so they can pick the temp that is right for them. ❤️

You will get more pastey butt and possibly overheated chicks if they can’t cool off.

I said one side was cooler @ 90 and moot point they moved at 4 am when i was leaving for work.. they had never fluffed, never moved away from it.. They moved to the other brooder with mama pad caves in it...

i always use a heat mlamp the first 20-24 hours ...

Appreciate the concern..

My original post did say one side 94-95 and one 90ish.. i do keep thermometers on both

I worked for an exotic vet many moons ago..and it was drilled to monitor temp for fresh hatch or sick parrots, conures, all birds, snakes, turtles etc..we did some normal animals but mostly not..

As well as working for large animal vets then paramedic..foaling manager.. and currently for a very large racehorse trainer overseeing starting of 2 year olds, rehab older horses, all post surgical care, wound care, and still overseeing the health of the farm broodmares, foals, weanlings and yearlings

I am always open to learn, the reason i ask some members so many questions and have downloaded or ordered hard copies of solid poultry care/health etc books.. as well as occassionally talk to our local licensed bird rehabber ( she has 20 years of nursing everything from songbitds to raptors) and the licensed wildlife rehabber who is a 20 year chicken owner.. plus my poor vet who walks through the barn everyday...
