Hi, my name is Debbie. I'm new at raising chickens. I got 10, 2week old babies from our local feed mill. They are 9 weeks old. We have 1 Delaware White, 5 brown Buckeye, and 4 black aus.(not sure how to spell) Just today one of my Aus crowed. I have read many posts and seen pics of both roo and hen. I can't tell the difference. Do hens crow?

glad you have joined us.

IMO the one crowing at that age is a boy.

Hens who crow do so because of hormonal/ovarian problems (most are ovarian or adrenal gland tumors) and are usually over 2 yo.

Hens typically do not crow and I say that because it is possible than a hen will take on the role of a rooster if there is not one present. However, it has only happened to my group of hens one time and that was after we lost a rooster which had been around for years. This hen even jumped on the backs of other hens as if to mate them. I would assume that a hen would only do this if it was previously exposed to a rooster but I wouldn't quote me on that.
