Hey, got this new "rare and unusual breed" chick with my new chick order today. Anyone care to venture a guess for me as to what kind it is? It came from McMurray's. I'm guessing Buttercup or Golden Campine but I'm up for anyone who knows more than me!!

Quote:I looked at that but they aren't listed under their "rare and unusual breed" category and it has those black eyes.

It's a chicken! [IMG] Just kidding! Actually, I was going to say EE or Americana as well. Because when they are babies they look like chipmunks. Did they maybe put another weird looking chick in there? What did you order?

"Rare" just means "left over" in this context. Snarky but true.

With the color on those feet, I have a hard time believing it's anything other than an EE.

EE is easter egger. Hatcheries sell birds they call "ameraucana" but they don't meet the breed standard, they are easter eggers...

An easter egger is a 'breed' of chicken that is bred for egg color. They may lay an egg with a blue or green shell, even olive colored - or sometimes brown too. I have found them to be gentle in temperment. [IMG]

It's an Easter Egger. Technically just a mutt that lays colored eggs. Hatcheries call them Ameraucanas or even Araucanas but they're neither.
