I have three leghorns I raised from one week old. They are 3 months old on the 9th.

I bought a coop from Urban Coop Company and they moved outside into it only about a week ago. They had lived in a stock tank before that, in my house, and spent time outside only when I was around to watch them....until I got the coop.

Tonight it's supposed to go down to 24 degrees so once it got to 32 degrees, I moved them inside to the stock tank again. After they settled in, I heard them trilling. That was a first.

Is anyone else afraid to leave their chickens out when it goes below freezing? It worries me.

Hi and welcome to BYC - great that you have joined us. At 3 months, they should be able to tolerate cold temps. These links may help provide some info on winterising chickens.

More generally, you'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you

At those temps, as long as the coop has ample ventilation, your Leghorns will be fine.

G’Day from down under Wendiane [IMG] Welcome!

Living in Aus, I am not going to be much help with regards below freezing temps but I see that you have received some good advice and tips.

I just wanted to say that I hope you enjoy BYC; not only is it overflowing with lots of useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures about chickens, turkeys, duck, quail, Peas and pretty much any other feathered and non feathered friends [IMG]
