hi! I have decided to own my very own backyard chickens! My family and I are super excited to start. We pick up our 6 chickies this coming Tuesday. 2 Easter Eggers, 2 golden comets, and 2 barred rock. All females.
I have been glued to you tube and different sites for tips and information but honestly personal experience and conversations constantly is my preference.
I’m setting up my brooder and debating on a heat lamp or the eco glow heater. I’m scared about fires and any other issues but it’s $80 versus like$10 for the lamp ... also they say if I do the lamp it can over heat the brooder I was planning on a big Rubbermaid bin some people use cardboard ugh so much info need direction

I live in upstate NY backyard is not huge but def not small I have plenty of space
So excited to be part of this community! Nice to meet u all!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. These two may be of particular interest to you:
Topic/Question of the week - Brooding and supplementing heat for chicks
Topic of the Week - Raising Chicks

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
