I had 2 chicks about noon today. Each flopped around the incubator and peeped a lot at first. After going into the brooder they just lay there and have not eaten or drinking anything. I know they can go 24 hours without food or water but will they figure it out on thier own. And do they tend to sleep a lot after being born which I would expect but want to make sure I am not neglecting anything.

Thanks, Jeff

I would get a second thermometer and make certain your temps aren't too hot. I would also dip their beaks (carefully, so they don't aspirate the water) to show them how to drink- they don't know until you do! Tapping your finger slowly to mimic a mother's feeding is a great way to attract them to the food. You keep tapping until they are eating 'with' your finger!

It's normal for them to take a long nap after hatching- they expend tons of energy and are really in need of a stretch-out-conk-out nap for a long time.
