I was told that the ingredient is a sulfur base, that it is all natural and the parasites are repelled by it's odor.

I wouldn't put much faith in what you're TOLD by someone trying to sell you a product.
There's no real benefit to feeding chickens Sulfur, and using their "logic" is should make the eggs stink and taste bad too

This is how Nutrena describes it, which is IDENTICAL to the attributes of DE, and can NOT be Sulfur

DE should be on the ingredient list, since that's obviously their "Mite Fighter"

DE (diatomaceous earth) is the ground up fossilized shells of algae (diatoms).

It is abrasive to the cell walls of parasites. It is used as dusting powder on the hens and in their coop with the purpose of causing parasites to die or go elsewhere. Some like to feed it to their chickens in the belief that it helps expel worms (through irritating their cell walls).

My Vet Tech daughter and I, after studying it, came to the conclusion that if it is irritating to the worm cell walls, it probably isn't doing the intestinal walls of the chicken any good either.

It is also highly irritating to the respiratory systems of birds (and people).

Research is sketchy as to its actual efficacy. I personally think it is better as a topical dust than a food additive.

If you use DE, it is wise to use a face mask and take care not to breathe it.

Therefore, be careful around any of the dust in the bottom of the Nutrena bags.

    My 2 cents

It might not need to be if it's less than 1% of the total weight
I can't think of very many other things that fit their description of the "mystery" ingredient

DE is neither a drug nor a chemical, and passes through the body unchanged.
It would be able to kill mites once it completely dried, and all that fits their description perfectly
