I had chickens 16 years ago when I was a teen, I always loved having them around. They were fun to watch chase grasshoppers and hunt other tasty things in the yard at my dads house. I enjoyed the interaction with them , and now I'm 32. One of my coworkers asked me if I knew someone that wanted a chicken.... I said sure , ME. so I grabbed a dog crate and we went to his friends house. It was an aggressive rooster that was attacking everyone who approached his hens. He was destined for a cook pot, So I stood there while three grown men cornered and caught him in a fish net. I swooped in and untangled him and he got just as calm and docile as ever a chicken could be... Everyone was amazed that he calmed down like that. I picked him up and with one arm we walked to my truck and put him in the dog cage.

Later I discovered he is a Speckled Sussex, He is such a Handsome bird. That was in December. I have four dogs and I didn't want my two American Bullies to make a chewy chicken treat of him so I got them on the porch together for a meet and greet. The bullies of course wanted to do the sniff and lick to see their new toy. But the rude shock of an angry peck to the nose was too much for them so now "George" runs the roost so to speak. He actually keeps them from their food dish, Until he has had what he wants. It is quite comical to see, George standing in the dog food dish and glaring at the cowering bulldogs. Today My brother rescued four Golden Buffs and a RIR from a friend's house. It has been two months since he was taken from his flock. This was his introduction to the new girls.

He was so happy. He was scratching and strutting up a storm.

I found BYC when I was researching George the SS.

I am a mechanic, I ride motorcycles, I repair anything that burns fuel and moves. I'm attempting to build a coop for all my birds tomorrow and I have to say I HATE wood working.... Give me a greasy engine or a welder and metal.... :(

Me, too! I traded a for pen a guy had that he didn't want. Gave him an old .22 semi-auto for it. I did manage to cobble together a pen for my meat birds that is functional if not beautiful. Next challange: a turkey coop!!
