My husband just set up the coop today! We have been reading for weeks about raising chickens. In about a week we will go look at chickens. Still debating on breeds and if we should add Bantams. Look forward to reading all the info I can find here!! Tracy

Hi Tracy and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us and congrats on the coop build! Bantams make for great eye-candy, but they will likely not make great egg-layers. I'd suggest getting as greater variety of breeds as possible - that way, you will learn which breeds suit you and your climate the best.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

G’Day from down under mswforu [IMG] Welcome!

I agree with CTKen on the bantam eye candy .. my freeloaders do not lay many eggs, but a bonus is that they are easy to find as they spend more time on the nest broody than anything else lol [IMG]

I jest .. I love them to bits and they are the sweetest little girls! However, we do only average 10-12 eggs a week with 5 bantams due to moulting, broodiness and just plain freeloading.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends [IMG]
