Just joined the BYC. Am looking to start a little flock in the spring. Working on ideas for Coops at the moment. Will Build myself.
Wondering about challenges of the cold weather up north and strategies to keep the flock safe.
In the Attleboro area, anyone else nearby??

I live in upstate NY and it gets mighty cold and a lot of snow. I have a couple of coops built 10x16 with electric in one. I use only hardware cloth so nothing can get in or chew it's way through. If your building please don't use plain old chicken wire. Minks, raccoons, and all those other creatures will get in and kill your flock.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You should check out our coop section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops. Also you can check out our section on keeping your coop warm in the winter at https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/winter-coop-temperatures. Feathers are excellent insulators, and as long as your coop is well ventilated so that moisture does not build up in it, and it is dry and draft free, your chickens should do fine. I've raised chickens where winter temperatures have dropped as low as 30 F below zero. Cold is not nearly as big a danger as moisture. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop built and in getting your flock.

Welcome to BYC. Folks on your state thread could best tell you to deal with the weather, among other things.
