Hi all! We had buff orpingtons and white leghorns when I was a kid, and I've always looked forward to the day I buy my own place in the country. That day has come! So I'm starting my homesteading escapades. No chickens yet, I'm trying to decide what breeds I want to start with. Im thinking about ordering silver spangled hamburgs and anconas from mcmurray hatchery. Both breeds are reported to be quick and alert, a good trait since I plan to free range. I want birds that will be good layers, good fryers, and pretty. Also, I would love to have some hens that will set their own eggs since you always lose some free ranging. Any tips there? I'm all ears for any advice you can offer!

Google the Henderson Chicken Chart for a great breed resource, very fun to read
