Hi, what a great website and forum!! Our whole family loves to raise chickens. In 2004, we bought 4 bantam chicks and we've been hooked ever since. Our intent with the original birds was to control grasshoppers in our backyard and to provide pets for our twin boys. Now we have 11 chickens, most of which are layers. We still have one of the original bantam hens. She is now over 5 years old. How long do chickens live, anyway!? Anyway, we enjoy our chickens for insect control and eggs. But, most importantly, they are just fun to have around. -Craig

Glad your here.

My book says chickens can live to 20yo, but that would be very rare if accurate.

Welcome from a fellow newbie! My daughters volunteer at a living history museum where the unofficial mascot for many years was a Appenzeller Spitzhauben rooster named Fritz. He was at least 8 years old when he died, they say of old age. He was a sweetie who let all the visitors handle him.
