I have two new Buf Orphington's and both will only lay eggs on top of the laying boxes in the coop. I have put up ramps for them to walk up to the laying boxes but they just want to lay the eggs on TOP of the boxes what can I do?[IMG]

Are the top of your nesting boxes flat? I made a steep slope on the top of my boxes that way they can't roost and poop on them either. And I have a roost right in front of the boxes. They like to roost close to their nest when they have eggs, maybe they sit on top because they can roost there too.

Quote:That is why the old-timers have a slanted top to the nest box clusters they build. (like mine) I used a hinge for my slanted top and store empty egg cartons and misc coop chore tools there.

I see!! yes the space above the nesting boxes is flat; I will have to fix this. Some of the eggs have actually rolled off!
