My new Araucana bantam hen will not come out into the run.
I have a large tractor with an upstairs.
She is on her second day of not coming down.
I "put" her down yesterday and she didnt eat or drink, an walked back up the ramp a few minutes later.

Back ground...........I bought a pair ( her and a roo ) at the chicken auction Friday night.
Brought them home around 9 and put them in the tractor. No problems.
Yesterday her and the roo were the only ones who wouldnt come down.
I put her down, and tried to grab the rooster, but he got loose and flew the coop.
Havent seen him since the big tomcat chased him out of the yard and into the woods.

Could it be that she is missing her rooster?
Could it be that she is just not hungry?

I'm kinda stumbling around here, wondering why.
All the rest of the birds I bought Friday night are having no problems. I bought two pairs and two extra pullets.

Advice?

she can go a few days without. not saying that she should, just that she can. yeah, it might be the rooster leaving or the change in her living situation. there is an adjustment period. does it seem like the other birds keep her from eating/driking?

I would try and give her some treats while talking soothingly. I would close the other chickens out so they can't take the treats. She probably won't take them from your hand so just leave a bowl and make sure she has access to water. Sometimes the old chickens try to prevent the new ones from taking their food. Araucanas can be a bit more timid than other breeds. Is there anyway you can try to find the rooster?

Rooster is long gone. The woods are thick and long, running for miles.
She is the biggest bird in the tractor so it is not a matter of the pecking order. She will be the queen.
I will try some treats in the top section, and a little bowl of water.

I did as instructed.
I put a small bowl of water and a cut down cup of feed in the top section on the wire.
She came right over and ate and drank with me standing right there.
Now she seems more at ease.

So much at ease that she flew down to the run and promptly showed the rest just exactly who was in charge! My my what a bossy little lady.

I guess she just had to get used to where she was.

What is really going to be interesting in how she handles my little OE Blue rooster. I have never seen one strut like him. What a show!

Thanks!

Great!
