We just bought three cross breed, year old hens from a lady (they were cheap). Their backs have been pecked by her rooster. Will the feathers grow back? We put them in the pen with the other four hens. The older ones started showing their dominance. How long will it take for them to get along. The last bunch we bought, they were all from one pen and got along.

Hi! Their feathers will grow back. Now, if the other hens start pecking them, you can either spray their backs with some Blue Cote or you can buy some hen saddles, which are very inexpensive, and put those on your hens, and that not only looks cute, it protects their backs and allows the feathers to grow back.

The Blue Cote basically paints their backs bright blue, but I guess chickens aren't attracted to that color, so it disguises the bald spot.

It may take a few days for the hens to work out their new pecking order, but just give it a bit of time...I'd check them a couple of times a day to make sure they're all OK.

Good luck with your new hens,

Sharon
