It's taken a while and a few life changes but I've convinced my husband that keeping chickens will be a good thing. Our timing could barely be better--we mentioned our new openness to the idea and a friend told us that he had recently been given two unsexed chicks by friends of his who won them as a door prize at an Easter party. He's got a decent flock of his own already and didn't really need any more, so he's giving them to us. If they turn out to be roosters, he's willing to take them back--we can't have roosters in our city limits without special permit and all, so to avoid the trouble, we're going to stick with just hens.

We'll be getting the chicks sometime this week, and I can hardly wait, even know it's going to be a while before we see any eggs!

Congrats on the new chicks! I hope they are both pullets as well. That is a great deal for you if they do turn out to be roo's. Kelsie has really left you with some great links to some good reading. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Our first pair of chickens has arrived!

My daughter liked the names Cinnamon and Sugar for them. Still not sure if either of them is a rooster, and hoping not--not even really sure what breeds they are, since the came to us from a guy who had them given to him by a family that won them at an Easter party. We've got them set up in a hutch in the shade, where they should be safe from predators until we can get their coop completed.



We're not sure, yet, but I think my little one said that Cinnamon is the white one and Sugar is the brown one.
 
Meet the new spice girls...




I know they're not easy to see, especially with their heat lamp on, but these are Ginger, a 1-1/2 week old Production Red, Saffron, a 4-day-old Easter Egger, Salt and Pepper, a 4-day-old Barred Rock, and Chickory, a 4-day-old BSL.

We're keeping these inside until they're big enough to meet Cinnamon and Sugar, and I think by then, we should have our coop built, so we'll probably let these little ones in first, and then the older ones, and we'll see how they all work out together.
