Hey fellow BYC'ers! I have had my chickens for about 4 days now! I got heavier breeds to withstand the downright bone chilling winters where I live. It is not uncommon for it to drop below -20 for a week at a time. I have two wyandottes one silver laced, one gold laced, a buff orpington, and red star. They are 6 months, and laying productively! They are great so far! It is wonderful to see the different personalities! My biggest concern is how to heat the coop this winter. Heat lamp or no heat lamp? I have read up and many believe it is more dangerous for the ladies to be used to the heat in winter and then lose it due to power outage (or whatever) than to have it all. I have my concerns with our regularly negative temperatures though. Anyone have any experience with sub zero temps on a regular basis?
