Hi Folk..I just joined BYC, want to say hello and look forward to learning more about backyard chickens. My wife and I are retired and live on a small 10 acre farm. My wife has horses, barrel races and ask me to get some chickens, so we got chickens.
I ordered and received my chicks April 29th. I have 15 Buff orpingtons, 14 hens, 1 rooster, 5 Black Australorps hens and one Easter egger gift chicken.
I built a coop this past winter at the horse barn with a 14X36 run covered with bird netting using lots of ideas from lurking here. The coop is built under a shed roof with a concrete floor covered with pine shavings and an automatic door that turns them out to the run. It has a roost with a poop board below and 10 nest boxes on the opposite wall that have been covered until yesterday.
We started opening the gate to the run at 10 AM in June and they free range inside a ten acre area inclosed with 54" tall diamond mesh fence. The rooster crowed at 20 weeks old, he got fresh with a hen for the first time 3 days back and I found our first egg yesterday on the poop board at noon. I removed the cover from the nest boxes last night, filled them with pine shavings and placed a ceramic egg in each box. No egg at ten this morning, went back at noon and had our second egg in a nest box!
That's pretty much my chicken story, Thanks for having us!
