  1. Hey there all! Happy to be here at BYC!

I have been wanting to get some chickens of my own for the longest time but just never got around to it. On April Fools day I happened to be at Rural King picking up dog food and they had chicks and I had no hubby with me to tell me no so, I took the plunge and purchased the 5 hens that I am allowed in my yard.

After picking one from each occupied bin I ended up with a Barred Rock (Roxie), a Buff Orpington (Buffy), a Red Cross (Tootsie), an Isa Brown (Penny), and a White Leghorn (Henrietta). Well, I don't know how it is for other folks but I'm gonna tell you I love these danged chickens and bizarrely so does the DH! It has been amazing watching them grow so much in the past two weeks and seeing their little personalities start to show. They have out grown their first box and almost the second and they are feathering out nicely.

It won't be long and they will be able to move outside. I can't wait for them to have a nice big home to play in. We live in an urban, historic district but are lucky enough to have almost a 1/4 acre lot so the DH is going to build them a chicken palace to live in. Then we are going to throw them a Coming Out party!

Thankfully, this site exists and I have been able to read up on keeping our girls safe. It never occurred to me how many predators we actually have in an urban setting! We will be building a coop soon that I hope does the job keeping stuff out.

We have 4 dogs that we have been socializing the chickens with and they seem to be ok with them. One of them is a 5.5 lb Chihuahua something mix, the smallest of the bunch and he has appointed himself "Official Chicken Dog". He lays outside their door and guards them from the other dogs. Not that the other dogs are doing anything other than try to see them. He just doesn't want them near. While that is all cute and everything I don't trust that they don't all look at my girls and see little chicken nuggets running around. So they will never be trusted to be alone with the girls outside their coop.
