I have referred to the knowledge given on Backyard Chickens over this past summer which is my first summer of owning chickens. I finally thought "Why haven't I joined?" So here I am. Keeping chickens has been a lifelong dream and after working to take care of my husband and daughter for the past five years I thought that it is time to do something for myself. I ordered my flock from Murray McMurray (don't say it; they were the first to show up on the search engine and I didn't know better at the time!) in March and got my girls and a few boys in May. They have done well except for the occasional hawk and their visits to the neighbors to uproot her garden. I am looking to expand my flock and maybe narrow my scope a bit from 10 breeds to just a few and eventually show. We finished our barn restoration this summer and a third of the barn is devoted to their coop and they have a 20' by 20' run. It is almost done. They are in a temporary coop converted from a greenhouse when I'm not home. Usually they are let out to roam free for a few hours when I get home from work. I will share pics sometime. They just started laying, but not as much as I would expect from 18 hens. I will address that on another thread.
