Hi everyone been browsing for a while and thought I would say hi.
I started my adventure last summer with 6 RIR chicks and 2 ducks.
I lost 4 chicks to local hawk and the ducks succumbed to unknown fate
on a friends pond. The 2 girls left are my pride and joy. Both contribute an egg a day consistently
and continue to amaze me with there antics and vocalizations. The dominate one is named
Red, for obvious reasons and the other I named #2 also for obvious reasons. I have in the last 4 weeks, acquired 8 more
of various kinds and am sure several are roosters. I do not want any roosters so I am not looking forward to
the obvious decision to be made as to what I plan to do with them hoping some good advice will come from
you more experienced chicken lovers. I will post pictures as soon as I figure out how.

    thanks,

    Tommy

Sometimes it's better to buy older "point of lay," birds, that way you know they aren't roosters. Or pay extra to buy "sexed" chicks - although that isn't infallible either. Another avenue is to buy sex links. These are birds that are bred to be a certain color for one sex or the other. In that way you know which are males and which are females.

Welcome to BYC! I would post an ad on Craigslist or see if your local feed store will take them off your hands. Good luck to you.

Welcome, I'm right next door in Arkansas! Sorry about your last chickens and ducks!

I would recommend either culling the roosters to make dinner, or trying to list them online. You can even list them here under the buy, sell, trade tab =)

I second the suggestion to get the pre sexed hens next time and double check that your feed store will ensure the sex that or get sex linked.
