Just posting to introduce myself to this forum. It has been very helpful and informative so far.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I got my chicks 3 weeks ago. We wanted them for years, but my wife ran a home daycare and it was against regulation to have birds. Now that she's gone back to teaching, we have finally gotten our birds.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
10, @ 3 weeks old
(3) What breeds do you have?
Buff Oprington. Supposed to be hens, but I guess we'll find out in a few months.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Fresh eggs. Our family uses a lot. Teaching my young boys responsibility and how to raise their own food. Growing up hunting, fishing, and growing my own food, I've learned that there are a few values I want to pass on to them. I believe raising their own birds can be a big part of that.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy hunting, fishing, and gardening.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a wife of 14 years and two boys, 10 and 5. My family and I own an upholstery and furniture repair shop.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found this forum by searching for answers to some of my questions regarding raising chicks. It seemed like a great place to find useful information so I joined in case I can help answer others questions.
