Hi all! Our last goat birth was a single to a FF. I wasn't much concerned about supply since she got it all! This time around we have a momma with triplets and a momma with twins, but the twin momma had mastitis last year according to her previous owner. Her udder is pretty lopsided and one side hangs so low it's hard for the kids to latch on. I've searched quite a bit, but can't seem to find consistent info on average daily weight gain. Our three little buckling triplets seems to be gaining pretty consistently and our buckling twin is getting the lion's share ;-) His little sister is gaining, but not very quickly. They are all very active, bouncy, normal looking kids so I'm sure they are fine, but want more opinions. I've wondered if I need to supplement "Lacy", especially, or if her weight gain looks ok? They started out a bit on the small side and I've heard of some that say their kids double their birth weight in a week, others double in a month and others say .20/day is good. Pictures are linked on the kids' names :)

Hi...From the pic she looks good. Small but proportionate. Are they eating any grain with mom yet, browsing?
Poop normal? Are her eyelids nice and pink?
Just some questions that may help with solutions if needed.

All of the others are mouthing hay, sticks and pasture more that she is. She just doesn't seem too interested yet. None of them are trying to get in mom's feed bowl yet. Poop looks normal, eyelids and gums are pink. I sat with them a little while last night and Mom didn't seem to like her nursing on her left side and kept stomping that foot. I kept putting Lacy back up to it and she tried to suck every time, so I'm thinking of milking that side and giving it to the babe. I squirted a little out and it didn't look clumpy, wasn't too warm and udder looks normal, no redness. I just squirted a stream though so I'll milk it out into a cup and check that this morning.

Thanks for your reply!

Check mom for sore spots on her teat, if she's got a scratch or a sore she'll act like that.
Don't want to give unnecessary advice, lol, so gonna ask background question...Are you new to dairy goats or goats in general? How long have they been with you? How's the moms general health?
Sorry, but like I said, I don't want to bore you with stuff you already know.;)

Good point... don't know why I didn't consider scratches, etc., earlier as that is pretty obvious :). Momma did have a scratch on that udder a few days ago. I haven't seen it for the last couple of days, but it may still be sensitive. We're not totally new, we've had goats for about 3-4 years now. This is our 3rd set of kids. First ones have all done great, easy keepers, no delivery or milking/nursing issues. Copper (momma) had a difficult labor/delivery, 1st kid wasn't positioned well. I ended up getting Semie's chin dislodged from the inside of the pelvis and then she delivered on her own a few minutes later. Lacy came out about a minute or so later with no issues. Back to the scratch, I'll check her teat when I get home this evening. It was really light when I saw it, but it was kinda long and went from the side of the udder down to the top (udder side) of the teat. It doesn't stand out at all anymore, at least I didn't notice it the last couple of days. Thanks :)

Baby may have irritated it nursing...You can put a little Neosporin with pain reliever on it, might help, won't hurt. Watch the little one and if your gut says milk a couple of ounces and bottle feed her ,go for it, but feed her in with mom if you can, let mom lick her while she's taking the bottle, helps keep em bonded sometimes.
Good luck and keep me posted!:pop

Oh, and don't feel bad about missing it...The simple things go unnoticed when things get crazy!Lol
I've had dairy's for about 10 years and still have those "smack myself duh why didn't I see that" moments too! :lau

I didn't see anything, so it must have healed over. Her udder wasn't as tight as it was last night and this morning. I saw each of them trying to get a sip, but neither stayed attached long, but at least Momma wasn't stomping anymore. :clap Lacy gained .13 today over this time yesterday, so she has to be getting something ;-) I caught her peeing tonight and it was clear. Thank you, thank you :)

Glad I could be there, didn't do anything but give you something to do;)
Most of the time these things work themselves out. You did great by catching it quickly and keeping an eye on her. Hope she keeps improving, my guess is she will. But feel free to pop in if she doesn't, and keep us posted. You can also send me a personal magazine if you'd like. Love talking goats!:highfive:
