Hello everyone,
I am new to all of this. I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area where I thought my food came from the grocery store and I had no idea where food actually came from. I moved up to north-central Pennsylvania about six years ago and now my husband, three children, and I are looking at getting some backyard dual purpose chickens.

Barred Rocks are a VERY popular dual-purpose breed.

Hi there,

and welcome to BYC!

Excellent! Raising your own food can be very rewarding and healthy for you. You are going to really enjoy keeping a flock of chickens and will never look back to store bought eggs or meat again.

You might do some reading in the learning center and the meat birds section here on BYC for some tips and hints on raising, keeping and processing your birds in the future....

Yes my husband I were looking into this breed. We were also looking at the Rhode Island red. I hear they're very good for our climate and they're good dual-purpose bird.
